The Unforgiving Streets

by Ian Fourcandles

/
1.
The cold is bad And winter kills And the constant damp The bones chills No clean clothes Or water hot Dirty feet Holed socks And it seems a danger is always near It's second nature to live in fear On the unforgiving streets Degradation On display Hung up In this gallery Move along Get out of here Policeman barks Who sheds a tear And it seems a danger is always near It's second nature to live in fear On the unforgiving streets On the unforgiving streets all day The unforgiving streets all night We all know it is not right We need to address people's plight On the unforgiving streets People live and sleep On the unforgiving streets Possessions lost Just objects But they were all That was left Of the ties To family Last vestige Of normality And it seems a danger is always near It's second nature to live in fear On the unforgiving streets This is barbaric What kind of civilisation Puts up with this degradation Criminalises instead of helping With huge swathes of housing stock empty This is a land of plenty The most vulnerable The ones experiencing real hardship Need help ,real constructive help This issue should be made to go away by housing people By offering shelter and protection These are real people with real lives Not rubbish to be swept out of sight
